HODGSON FARM REGIONAL GARDEN REMINDERS
Ever wish someone would tell you when to plant everything? Just when is the right time for beans? corn?Wonder
no more! Let the garden itself guide you. Our friends at
HORTICULTURE magazine have published this handy guide to indicator plants. There really is something to those old wives tales: *When lilac leaves are the size of a mouse's ear(!), sow peas, lettuce and other cool weather crops *When lilacs are in full bloom, plant beans *Once lilac flowers have faded, plans squash and cucumbers. *When dogwood reaches peak bloom, plant tomatoes and peppers. *When bearded irises are in bloom, plant peppers and eggplants *When Maple leaves begin to unfold, plant perennials INSECT CONTROL: *When
crabapple and wild plum are at bud break, eastern tent caterpillars are
hatching. Look for them and start controlling them *When forsythia is blooming crabgrass is germinating, this is the best time to treat for it!
Remember the last frost date for our area (zone 5) is May 25th...Happy Planting
